Not too many people know that Pasadena California has several historical neighborhoods within the city. These neighborhoods each have their own history dating back to the later 1800’s and early 1900’s. As a Pasadena Real Estate Agent that sells homes in Pasadena and helps people buy homes in the city, I have learned a lot about each of the neighborhoods.

One of the neighborhoods with the best views is called Kinneloa Mesa. This area was started back in the later 1800’s by a man named Abbot Kinney. This man was called a world traveler. The sunny, warm and dry weather drew him out to the Southern California area for the later part of his life. It was while he was out in Pasadena that he discovered the beautiful mesa at the base of the San Gabriel foothills.

He decided to build a two story home on this mesa that was overlooking the San Gabriel Valley and he could see all the way to Catalina Island on a clear day (They didn’t have too much smog back then). After building this home and clearing out all the brush around the home people began referring to the place as “Kinneloa,” which meant “Kinney’s Hill” in Hawaiian. Kinney went on to develop another area in Southern California that most people are familiar with. He spent several years constructing and building this part of the city. Today we call it Venice.

Ever since then, people have sought after buying and selling Pasadena Real Estate in the Kinneloa Mesa area because of its great location and magnificent views. Today there is a large section of this area that is gated. My first time visiting the area wasn’t very successful as we couldn’t get past the gate to see the homes near the top. It is not uncommon to find multi-million dollar homes within this neighborhood. Their prime location and incredible views make them highly sought after. If you have a chance to check them out then you will understand. There is a good reason why Kinney was first drawn to this area. The man had vision and he was able to make many accomplishments during his days living in Southern California.

Linda Vista is a street that goes through Northeast Pasadena CA. Located right next to the Rose Bowl, this street has also become known as a neighborhood called the Linda Vista area. This area is filled with beautiful homes, luxury estates and magnificent views of the San Gabriel mountains and the Rose Bowl valley.

Why do residents like living in this area? Well, it has a convenient location. It is right next to the 210 and 134 Freeways with easy access. It is also on the side of the hills going down to the Rose Bowl valley. There are some homes that have incredible views of the Rose Bowl, golf course and mountains. There are a lot of beautiful homes and mansions built in this area that have helped make it a desirable place to live. Many people search the Pasadena MLS to purchase real estate in this area.

Another popular area in Pasadena California is Chapman Woods. With over 450 homes, this sought after neighborhood is shaded by large oak trees and rests in the Southeast corner of Pasadena. If you have been there you may remember the “Chapman Woods” signs that are located at several entrances to the neighborhood. Why "Chapman Woods?" This area was named after a West Point grad by the name of Alfred D. Chapman,.who acquired nearly 2000 acres of land around in 1869. It was later years that he sold some of the Eastern land off. The area became heavily shaded as Chapman planted trees across the acreage as well as a citrus vineyard. In the warm summer climate the trees provided a break from the sun. One of the homes in Chapman Woods was the home on Gone with the Wind.

Look at the neighborhood demand by asking a Pasadena real estate agent (use the links above) whether multiple offers are being made, whether the gap between the list price and sale price is decreasing and whether there is active community involvement. You can also drive around neighborhoods and see how many "sale pending" and "sold" signs there are in a particular area. In both the Linda Vista and Chapman Woods areas you will find that there is high demand.

Most importantly, if you are looking to buy a home in Pasadena, do not miss the opportunity to take a drive through these neighborhoods. You will be glad you did. Weve all done it. You are driving down the road and suddenly you find yourself passing big houses. We ooh and ahh, saying how much wed love to live in one of them. Perhaps we even slow down to admire the landscaping and the décor that the big houses have. We admire the fact that the lawns are perfectly maintained. We cannot help but wonder what careers the residents have that allow them to live in such luxurious and big houses. Admit it, weve all pondered this.

What we dont always realize is the big houses dont just mean big mortgages. They also mean bigger bills. Having a big house means that you have more space to heat and cool. Utility bills could be incredibly higher than a normal sized house. Taking care of those big lawns and maintaining perfection can be quite costly as well. Most times, to get that look of perfection, it is necessary to hire landscapers to create and maintain its appearance. Residents of big houses are probably using more water as well; in the numerous bathrooms and watering their perfect lawns. Most likely, if they own pools, that is adding to the using more water as well.

And the absolute worst part about living in big houses is that there is much more to clean. Granted, most people who live in big houses likely can afford to hire people to do the cleaning for them. Thats one more expense. But, if you dont want to hire a cleaning service, you are stuck with extra rooms and more space that needs to be cleaned.

More and more these days, big houses are being built from scratch and for the amount of money people are paying for them, they are on incredibly small lots. Suddenly, theres this beautiful big house without very much of a yard. Since there arent large yards, these big houses tend to be built practically on top of each other. Youd think that if you were going to spend the amount of money that those big houses are costing, youd want more privacy and a larger property. But, people are buying the big houses with tiny lots. There are lots of advantages and disadvantages to having small yards and incredibly close neighbors though it comes down to being a personal preference.

One thing that many residents do find is that big houses are often built quickly. The quickness of the building may mean that for the amount of money that you are spending, you may not be getting quality. Sometimes, it is the older homes that are built more secure and stable. Homeowners may find that they have more problems when moving into these brand new big houses.

So, the next time youre driving through a ritzy neighborhood, drooling, think about all of the disadvantages to having a large home. When you get home to your smaller house, maybe youll feel a bit more contented.

Big Houses

There's nothing like growing up in a small, three-bedroom ranch house to make you crave big houses. Ever since I can remember, I was fascinated by the idea of one day owning a big house. I loved anything with mansions on a hill, castles, forts, or Châteaus. My parents seemed to feel the same way. On weekends, we would drive through the expensive, ritzy neighborhoods on the edge of town. My parents said it was because they were more scenic, but I knew in my heart that we were there to look at the big nice houses. My parents were great parents, but they never had a lot of money. They always felt a little bit insecure about this, even though they could provide for us. I was grateful for everything that they did for me, but I did share their dreams. One day, I wanted to own a big nice house too.

When I started to look at big luxury houses, however, I was a little bit dismayed. At the time, I was working a good job. My income was in the high five figure rang, but even so I knew I would never be able to afford any of the really big houses that I saw. Real estate cost too much money. Property rates were high in the area I was currently living in, and even small houses were pretty expensive. Maybe I would be able to afford a fixer upper one day, but I would never be able to live in the type of luxury that I had envisioned.

One day, however, I came to realize that it would be possible to buy a bigger house. The key was to look for unconventional opportunities. Most people who are buying real estate simply look at the market, but there are other places where you can acquire big houses. For example, when banks foreclose on houses or when the government repossesses homes involved in criminal activities, they often sell them off at below market rates. You have to be willing to do a little fix up work most of the time, but it is well worth it. You can end up with a great home at a very affordable price if you know where to look for it. After going to a few of these auctions, I started to bid myself. Soon, I was living in one of the really big houses on the outside of town!

When in college, I cleaned houses to pay my way though. It was not a bad job, or at least, not as bad as it sounds. It paid the bills though, and allowed me to see some really amazing places. Though there arent many perks when working as a maid, that is one of the biggest ones. I saw some of the best big houses in the city, and it seemed there was no end to them. Each was as great inside as the next, and some were very surprising. Its amazing how some with money can hide out in a less than desirable neighborhood without giving away how much money they have, at least from the outside. You would never know.

One thing about working as a maid that bothers me is that I lost my will to clean now. Its been a long time since I did it, but I swear I used up my cleaning allowance all in two years. I have always thought I wanted to have big houses, but now Im not so sure. I have a hard time keeping up with what I have now, and if I had a big house, I think I would be overwhelmed. Though finances are okay, I cant see myself hiring maids any time soon.

That is just one consideration someone has to think about when deciding if they want to look at big houses or not. Some dont mind cleaning, and if they think they have the time for a big house cleaning all of the time, then perhaps that would not bother them. Some with larger families have no choice, but even then, they have more help in that department. Room is another consideration. There is nothing more wonderful than having room for all of your stuff.

Big houses cost more all the way around too. Heating and electric bills are higher, and so is the upkeep. If the big house needs to be painted, it just costs more in material and labor. More furniture is needed, and that means more things like sheets and towels. However, those things dont bother some, and they love the fact that they live in a very large home. Though many wouldnt consider this something to think about, it will be one thing I will ponder when we finally buy our own home. This might be one time when size does indeed matter.
